Smith Tug
Lost: 10/25/1935 Depth: 165
The Smith tug was built in 1881 at Buffalo, NY. By the time she was 50 years old, she had been bought and sold several times and was much in need of a major overhaul. Plans were made to tow her from Port Colborne, ON to Saria, ON on October 25th, 1930. She was taken under tow and headed into the lake. By 2am, they were off the tip of Long Point, ON when the tug foundered. No lives were lost. The Smith rests in 165 feet of water, and appears to be ready for her next tow assignment. She's intact, down to her wheelhouse, spoked wheel and whistle. Her name and port are still legible on the stern. Visibility often exceeds 40' at this site. Photos by Tom Wilson
